From challenging hikes to pleasant strolls

Although mostly famous for its incredible beaches, Kos' mesmerising landscape also includes a few imposing mountains that make for the best setting for a hike or a trek. The hiking trails on the island are easily accessible to all healthy travellers in the mood for some physical (and mental) exercise, requiring a moderate degree of physical fitness.

Kos' lush vegetation and wondrous natural setting offer all wayfarers countless opportunities for tireless hikes! The landscape is undeniably fascinating for every visitor that cares to explore the island. The island's luscious flora and fauna, mountainous picturesque villages and architectural diversity, are only some of the benefits to enjoy when hiking in Kos. Take a stroll through Plaka forest in Antimachia, to admire dozens of exotic peacocks and cats living together in peace. Visit Tsoukalaria, a suburban forest with the scenic church of Panagia Tsoukalaria - hence the name, to simply rest and recover. Or wear your proper shoes, get your backpack and go discover two of the most popular hiking trails below.

Palio Pyli

One of the most sought after hiking trails is that of Palio Pyli. Walking completely off road and literally into the forest, this route can be found about three kilometres southeast of the village of Pyli and will lead to an altitude of 300 metres, at the ruins of the mediaeval fortified Byzantine settlement called Palio Pyli and its homonymous castle, built on the 11th century. The mediaeval settlement is ruined now and was abandoned by its inhabitants between 1810 and 1830, after an epidemic outburst.

Mount Dikaios

Another hiking trail found in the evergreen island of Kos is the one leading on the top of mount Dikaios. Mount Dikaios, known to the ancients as Oromedon, Orion or Dikeon, is the highest mountain of Kos, with an altitude of 846 m. This is one of the most well-marked and well-shaped trails on the island, with dozens of signs pointing the way, making it hard to get lost. The starting point can be found in Zia (starting from the spring because the signage is clearly better). As you finally reach the top, you will notice the large majestic cross and small scenic Chapel, dedicated to Christ. The view is remarkable and on a clear day, you can gaze at the horizon overlooking Pserimos, Giali, Nisyros and Kardamena from above. The splendour of nature, the magnificent view, and the fading yet visible paths of history, create a sense of vastness for all visitors. In fact, the hike is a ritual for locals who climb the mountain every year on the 5th of August, during the eve of the chapel's celebration (celebration is on August, 6). Dozens of believers hike there and some of them - the more daring ones - even stay overnight. Mount Dikaios may not be the easiest to conquer, but it is definitely the easiest to fall in love with!
